Sometimes people ask me what I miss most about East and Southeast Asia and I’m like

I miss eating good food with people at 4 in the morning

People think I’m joking, but I mean this literally. (Also just saw a video of ‘people crowding a restaurant at 4:30am the moment it opens in Guangdong’ and it was so familiar and homey and I miss that shit so much.

No breakfast food of course, just food.

Guangdong video (in Cantonese): people hovering outside a restaurant in Shunde and completely filling it when it opens at 4:30am

@skinnylatte Waking up early or staying up late? I can get on board for the latter.

For some reason, congee and soy milk places are most popular for 4am food (there are always 24/7 places for those)

At least where I spent the most time a lot of the 4am crowd / food also the ‘European soccer’ fans time but instead of sports bars (it’s too early) it’s drinking tea and coffee and eating rice and noodles at ‘mamaks’. Like it was legitimately a ‘meet up with your friends at 4am at a specific place to watch English premier league or Spanish soccer and eat snacks together’ was a big part of my social life back home

Example of a 24/7 soy milk shop in Taipei (in English)

Just the general availability of street and food life, I miss desperately. Once I can, I want to go back to that part of the world. Living like this also makes me feel like part of a community in a way I don’t often feel here

@beep my other main realization is that I basically expect every single meal to be amazing and incredible. That’s because I would have had to go out of my way to find a meal that wasn’t.

That’s flipped outside of that part of the world, and I feel a little bonkers for even daring to assume that every meal should be amazing and incredible

@skinnylatte I had a wild night out partying with Indian and South East Asian girlfriends in Sydney many years ago. About 3am one of the group announced we all had to follow her, and she took us to a place in Chinatown where we ate congee.
She said we’d feel better tomorrow for doing that.
      She was probably right!
      I didn’t get a hangover.
