@Linux@nicetux He's not "gifted", he's usurping leadership of a popular project and flooding it with changes that create serious problems.
He's not just an "asshole", he's a sociopath or egomaniac putting harmful ideas on the flagstaff of his software shenanigans.
And this is not the first time @BrodieOnLinux is running public defense for someone like that, while making wild claims about "how things work in the foss world".
"We last mentioned Weigelt's work on improving X.org multimonitor support about a year ago. However, this was not his first appearance in the pages of The Register – back in 2021, Linus Torvalds rebuked him for spreading pseudo-scientific, anti-vaccination claims."
"It's explicitly free of any "DEI" [diversity, equity, and inclusion] or similar discriminatory policies."
@outfrost@Linux@nicetux As for "usurping the leadership", I fully support someones right to fork a project if they don't agree with the direction it is going. You don't have to like the fork but this is one of the fundamental rights of the FOSS world and I'll protect it until the end.
@outfrost@Linux@nicetux I don't see an issue with that, he wanted the work to be merged in the core project, that wasn't going to happen so he went and did his own thing.
@BrodieOnLinux He can fork to his heart's content, godspeed. Before forking (and calling freedesktop "toxic elements", "moles", "state actors", and bigots), he made a big point of how much important work he's doing, how he's the only one who's trying to "get X11 back on track again" and "make X11 great again" (sic), but also how his hundreds (!) of "trivial" MRs are waiting for attention.
@outfrost@Linux@nicetux Firstly that's a joke, secondly yeah I do think it's a problem that CoC actions are done privately as we can see with the GNOME Foundation kicking out a voted in board member and never explaining why that's the case destroying trust in the organization. This is extremely damaging and I want to see it change ASAP
@BrodieOnLinux Why are you making me quote your own work to you?
"but as tends to be the case in the FOSS world, anytime a CoC committee is involved, basically transparency be damned, (...) destroy your reputation as much as possible, let people run wild with whatever theories they want to do, because that's the way we do it in the FOSS world."
@outfrost@Linux@nicetux I would disagree on the largely unproductive as we can see from the majority of the patches he's made not being reverted. There are instances but to say largely unproductive isn't fair.
@BrodieOnLinux And yeah, talking about bugs, reverts, how Weigelt's output has been largely counterproductive for xserver, and how he's openly antagonised other devs, but then he's somehow also the good guy!
"This is the person doing the most work on Xorg in the modern era."
"I know there are people involved in freedesktop that watch this channel. I want you to be aware that this was the biggest mistake that you have ever made."
@BrodieOnLinux Directly commenting on Weigelt submitting untested MRs, having them merged, then ignoring requests to fix problems and carrying on with more chaotic untested MRs: "Now, I will say, this is normal behavior in the FOSS world. (...) people are just working in other projects, working on other merge requests, and it sits open for like 7 years, right? (...) It is absolutely annoying, but this is what you signed up for wanting to work in the FOSS world."
@BrodieOnLinux So it's a joke, but it's not a joke? Which is it?
And are we talking about one maga antivaxxer being hostile to contributors, overtly displaying bigotry, and getting the boot for it, or are we talking about an elected foundation board member being kicked out? These are entirely different situations. Project committees are not required to explain to the internet why they banned a toxic sociopath, nor does it have much pragmatic value.
They're not required to explain things to the public absolutely, but the public is also not required to trust any actions they decide to make going forward, transparency is the only way we keep open source open. You're letting yourself get too caught up in what you don't like about this individual, think about the idea in the abstract
@BrodieOnLinux Don't see an issue with the hostility, spam, ego-stroking, belittling the work and expertise of others, or even the fascist messaging? Noted, will remind people not to work or associate with you.
@outfrost@Linux@nicetux 3 messages is not spam. I'm not sure how you got to "fascist messaging" from these comments? Also English is very clearly not his first language so keep that in mind when communicating with people online.
