When you saw the OLPC XO-1, you may have been expecting it to win “cutest”. This means you are not aware of some deep yomimono lore: I bought one of the very first netbooks, the EeePC 701, and I love and treasure it so much. Did you know its soldered-in storage is Compact Flash exposed over parallel ATA? It’s not even in the running for Worst Keyboard, by the way. No, the EeePC 701 is the cutest <3 <3 <3

I owe the Compaq Contura 420c an apology. When it came to me, the built-in display did work. I took it apart and I didn’t reconnect the display cable properly, and now it’s external-VGA only. It’s the only computer that is definitely in worse shape than when it got here, and I’m sorry. Compaq Contura 420c, you deserve better.

Competition was stiff^W mushy, but the OLPC XO-1 took “worst keyboard” after a last-minute second opinion from my partner. The intent was one laptop per child, but the result is two laptops per yomimono’s basement.

Nobody is sure who invited this Pentium 4 with no power supply and less than a gig of RAM, which came home in a wheelbarrow from someone else’s hoard that got shoved out on the street. But now that it’s here, we’re charmed by this built-in tower-top CD storage bay, where we imagine many a Sims expansion pack once sat ready. We awarded it “Best Buy (R) (TM)” in honor of its probable origins.

Next up we have a true-blue old friend, the Shuttle xPC mini-PC graced with a very early 64-bit AMD Sempron CPU. With IDE, SATA, AGP, IDE, USB, plus functioning floppy and CD reader/writer drives, it’s not just a tweener PC. It’s the tweenest.

when beholding the Cubietruck (or Cubieboard 3), it is immediately obvious that this computer deserves “most surprising Xen hypervisor”. While other computers in the basement may be Xen hypervisors, none of them has executed anywhere near the number of flawless jump scares as the Cubietruck, which has been subject to special security screening on 3 continents.

the title of “most actually useful” is awarded to Thelio r2, a @system76 desktop machine I use for normal computer stuff that isn’t weird at all.

the title of “Glossiest” is awarded to “PowerMac G4”, a computer I bought from a radio station via surplus auction and then hauled home on the bus.
