    @domi @leo
    a bit of a tangent:

    If you had the choice to:
    - make ISPs required by law to let you bring your own modem / media-converter,
    or
    - make ISPs required by law to provide you an ethernet port bridged to whatever they're using for L2, that you can connect your own router to

    which would you prefer?

      @wolf480pl @domi @leo Definitely #1.
      I got #2 here for ages and it's just horrible because it means a blackbox you have no control over that can crash or fail to connect and having no idea why, and it's not in the ISP premises so they're like half-not-responsible for it.

      @wolf480pl @domi @leo And those are also typically how you go from an actual internet connection to a somewhat closed network (like some ports being blocked, or traffic redirected to their own servers as sometimes done with DNS and TCP/25).

      @wolf480pl @leo @domi Depends what you mean by SLA but usually I see it as "guaranteed 99% of uptime" which for an ISP can be pretty awful as at worst can mean 3.65 days of downtime at once without it being a problem.

      I'd much rather force them to have detailed status information so you can somewhat predict how long an outage lasts and use an alternative in the meantime (which just be plugging your smartphone into your router, or more annoying like going to like the public library or local hackerspace).
