I have a series of annoying things about the wheels on both my bikes that I would really like to fix. With more time and headspace now, I’d like to just do it myself.

This toot brought to you by having a flat in my front, which got fixed, and then having a flat in my rear. My Rene hearse tires are pretty and amazing when they work, but I really dislike the more than usual amount of flats that I get.

@wlukewindsor maybe it’s the way I’ve set it up. I will do it again and see if it’s any better

@skinnylatte same - I’ve been very lucky recently but had a whole sequence of RH punctures from glass and flints a while back - no idea why they’ve been more reliable recently

@vfrmedia yep those are pretty common here. I used to run them on another bike. Will think more about what I want

@skinnylatte I had fairly good results with Schwalbe Marathons (not sure however if they are easily available in USA?) but even those are not 100% "unplattbar", there's a particular kind of flint as well as a type of particularly sharp thorn (common in Eastern England, but not SE England or outer London) that *will* puncture them..

I’ll probably set up the Continental Gatorskins on my Bridgestone bike (my Monterey bike) but I still want something a little nicer on my Riv

@sarajw @vfrmedia I have a theory it might be the rims. This bike got stolen and returned and it’s never been the same since. Didn’t have an issue before. I am thinking I might replace the rims and do the tape and see how it goes.

There’s a community bike shop here where I can just go into the back and do stuff like this and ask for help when I need so it feels less intimidating

@skinnylatte @vfrmedia wow building wheels spunds like super hard mode! I don't dare mess with spoke tension balancing 😅

The flats you get - where on the tube are the holes? Are they from sharp things that have got through the tyre, or are they near the valve, or are they pinch flats?

I had a bike that always got a hole by the valve - turned out the rim tape was badly placed and the edge of the valve hole cut into the tube. New rim tape, Marathon+ tyres, done. Never had a flat since.

I rode on ThickSlick for many years. I found that they are durable and fast, and grip the pavement really well, even in the rain. I dont know if they're right for you, but it's something to consider. They come in fun colors, too, not just black.
