     It doesn’t stop there. If you look at how GDP is calculated, you can see some major holes just on a mathematical basis. The sorts of things that are included or excluded become an entangled web of nonsense.

     The origin of this measurement at least I read somewhere was US war time production numbers for tanks versus Germany then become this thing

     And GDP is a deeply flawed mechanism for measuring economics in the first place, as it completely devalues the "work" done by nature that is left alone, etc etc.

     @MissGayle @gerrymcgovern Yes that is much closer to what I was thinking anyway. Why the preoccupation with GDP. It's a myth to equate technical progress with GDP.

     It's not a preoccupation with growth per se, it's a preoccupation with profit and greed. A steady-state economy can provide enough for everyone to live comfortably - but it can't support lavish lifestyles. And the rich don't want to live comfortably. They want ridiculous lavishness.

     DeGrowth is going to happen whether the oligarchs want it or not. The only question is whether it will be a logical egalitarian controlled rollback or a crash and burn that cripples the economy entirely.
