@sidereal @nullagent Vindicated sucks. I dont want to be vindicated, I want people destroying their smart phones in protest.

@errant @sidereal @nullagent How about the data centers rather than their phones?

@errant @sidereal @nullagent ..?
A phone is a tool you can use for or against the system. Or just to get by in the world.
The data centers are the ones that are purely committing harm.

@dalias @sidereal @nullagent "You have to understand that most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system that they will fight to protect it."

@dalias @sidereal @nullagent No it is not. It is _THEIR_ tool. I dont even care about destroying the tool. I want to destroy the mentality. The one that prioritizes convenience over privacy. That leaves open the door to manipulation in exchange for another dopamine hit. I dont want to destroy the data center, I want to make it pointless because it no longer has data to hold. I want people to understand that a computer not in their control is a collar.

@errant @sidereal @nullagent Ok like seriously, the phone can be rooted and running an OS that's not theirs, or can just have all the spyware and automatic updates disabled. But folks need something to run Signal, a browser, a Mastodon client, etc. on even if they're not running 🐈💨 or TikTok or YouTube or Facebook.

@errant @sidereal @nullagent (1) Baseband: No, but it's not supposed to have any control over the computer the radio is attached to. Does it? That's a good question that's under-researched.
(2) Can you stop updates? Yes, absolutely.
(3) Play Services? If it's a good alt OS, no, there's no Play Services (LineageOS, etc.), or Play Services is sandboxed and defanged (GrapheneOS), or no Android at all (PostmarketOS).
(4) Pull location from baseband? If you're connected to the cellular network then yes that's announcing your location relative to towers. When not connected to that, no, they can't. And that only links the IMSI (SIM card number & identity it was purchased under) to the location; it doesn't link software on the mobile computer *unless* the software is backdoored to cooperate.

@dalias @sidereal @nullagent But do you control the baseband firmware? Can you stop it from getting updates pushed to it? You say rooted, fine, but it is running Play Services? If so then google can push apps or remove them. They can pull your location, even from the baseband. If you think rooting gives you ownership over that hardware I'm sorry to tell you but thats an illusion.
