The only thing #UNIX did right was to make Emacs the standard editor, (ed) #LispM #LispMachine.

@ksaj All systems I’ve logged in on over the course of 40 years have always had Emacs. :-)

@amszmidt It must drive you crazy that the vast majority of Linux distros, and all embedded OS's that have any editing capability, have vim and not emacs by default. :ablobcatrave:

@amszmidt I don't share that experience. None of my Linux boxes have ever had emacs unless specifically installed after the fact.

It's probably true for Sun and SCO operating systems. Not on QNX. Not on fbsd. Not on NetBSD. Not even Xenix (remember that one?)

@ksaj Yup .. old enough to remember Xenix. Ultrix had Emacs, Solaris had Emacs -- at least on the systems I was accessing. Even VMS had Emacs. Maybe just kind sysadmin/sysops. 😉

@amszmidt VMS was pretty unwieldy, so having emacs by default doesn't surprise me much. 😈

@ksaj It took me 10 years before I figured out you can change the current working directory on VMS.

I guess they would have called it EMACS.
