@afreytes I voted yes, but believe that's the case because there's a 24 hour news because it makes money, and money making news is the real problem.

@afreytes Nah, it's feudalism all the way down imo. If it was capitalism there'd be more freedom of choice, and smaller, more focused/local options. But it's so hard to break into, because startup costs are so high, that it doesn't make sense to. Even just a website has to pay rent via ads that don't pay enough.

What about capitalism guarantees freedom of choice? Globalization is good for business!

@RethinkJeff Agreed... I was gonna put in a fourth "it's the capitalism" option but I feel like I'm always talking about capitalism as the root of (mostly) all evils and I don't want to sound completely neurotic about capitalism being the literal root of all evils... 🤭

@cy @afreytes It doesn't, but if you don't have freedom of choice, specifically in spending, then you can't have a functioning capitalism.

Seems to be functioning pretty well for the capitalists!

The reason I don't think it's feudalism is that when feudalism ended, all common land was stolen, then leased to the people who formerly used it for free, and all serfdom land was also stolen, the lords declaring acktchually this is my land get out, but you can lease it from me if you want to be a tenant farmer. It was a huge decrease in the rights and quality of life for the average feudal peasant, and one of the primary motivators to send them to the death pits known as industrial cities.

Capitalism is high octane feudalism, really. Lending, renting, and investment are all pretty much the same thing. People running a business pay rent to investors, people buying a car pay rent to the lenders, etc. It's paying rent on money itself, so I give you $3000, you have to pay me rent on it until you give me it back.

@cy @afreytes My argument is that while unchecked capitalism got us here, there are no capitalists anymore, especially on the scale that people usually talk about them; they're making their money off rents, which is feudalism shit.

The start of feudalism was back in Rome, when they decided everyone was going to be bound to the land and forced to pay tribute to keep their military oppressors powerful and well fed. It sucked.

@cy @afreytes What you are describing as the end of feudalism is the start of feudalism.
