There is one thing that I frown upon in Babylon 5. The same trope I frown upon on most fantasy-science-fiction worldbuilding; the humans are the most averagelly special race ever. The human race is exceptional because of how normal it is and no one can beat them forever.

If I ever write my own sf novel humans will be relegated to being the cockroaches of the whole local group galaxies.

Fedi has finally entered my dreams.

Last night in a dream I realized, "Oh shit! These people are speaking in Italian! I don't know what they are saying!"

But there was a popup slightly above and to one side of their heads with the translate icon, so I activated it, and read the translation.

All the while I was thinking, "oh I hope they don't mind I have to use the translation tool, how embarrassing!" but of course they seemed to be fine with it and I was just being overly anxious.

I'm sorry in advance if this sounds cringe or sappy. Or if it is something well known. But right now the difference, for me, in using Linux versus Windows is hope. It really is. Let me explain.

On Linux, if I have an issue, or a problem, something I don't understand. I have hope that I can find a way, an alternative, a forum, someone that will help, or even make it better by myself. No matter the issue hope drives me forward.

On Windows, there is no hope anything will get better.

What is the length of text permitted in Mastodon's "Personal Note" field? Is the limit per each followed account? Or is it a limit on the followee?

I might have asked this before but... Could I, for example, hide a whole novel in the server by putting half a chapter in the Personal Note of every account I follow?

Whenever a person answers a question in such a way that the question was not really answered but it seems the person is oddly satisfied that they indeed answered even though they consciously or unconsciously know their answer is unhelpful I almost always think:

"Oh, they must work at Microsoft..."

You know, because of that one joke, the helicopter one.

Hiding among my government "coworkers" was easy. I used to be one. I knew I'd pass most conversations by agreeing with the speaker along political lines, and never talking badly about our dear leaders.

I soon found an out of the way office that was fully furnished. Almost right next to a bathroom. And with the holy grail!...a working ether-net jack.

My GF grew a little mad at me. Because, I started "going to the office" daily. But It was so peaceful, it was a boon to my writing!

So maybe, instead of renting an apartment, I could just occupy a vacant office!?

I mean, I live with my GF, I only really need a single room, with a desk, a sofa, electricity, internet, and a near-by bathroom. Practically any office would be perfect!

So, I cased out a couple of office buildings, picked the one that had the least restrictive parking. Then went in and tried mingling with the remaining government employees to try to suss out where to "set up shop"...

First thing first: Understand that the government in this island will oftentimes try to mimic what the mainland imperial government does (while not really understanding why colonial power does something). Mainly to try to ingratiate itself to the powers that be. Latest example, we know have our own DOGE-like agency...

Now the dream...

In the dream, I figured, that if people were getting fired, there would be lots of offices that would stay empty.

Hey, remember the CEO who said early in 2025 (don't remember exact details sorry) that 100% of all code would be created via "AI"?

How is that going, anyone know? We should be like at 30% I guess? Is there like a website tracking that?

Had a dream. In the dream I was back on a job I had in the 2010s. In this job we had a kitchenette with two tables where a dozen or so people could have lunch at the same time. So I was having lunch there and in came a dark knight made out of PS2 era polygons. Not TV polygons but polygons made real. They were a temp. Filling time between videogame gigs. Their food, after they'd heated it in the microwave, smelled delicious. Although they opened up their helmet to eat, their face remained unseen.

I generally dislike FPS games but every few years I try a Doom game to see if I finally get it. Since I uninstalled Sniper Elite (not FPS but shoot+guns) I decided to try Doom 2016 (because shoot+guns)... Nope, I still don't "get" it. Probably just me.

What is the best FPS ever?

Windows 11 annoyance of the day. AFAIK, you cannot set or influence the font size of only just the Explorer. You have to scale font size on an OS wide level. Again, AFAIK

I know for a fact MS has amazing programmers. So I feel stuff like that has to be by design, like MS _wants_ Win11 to be not great.
