Remember when the Fediverse was built on CWs and alt text? I see both slipping again lately. I just feel like everyone needs a reminder now and then that both are appreciated. They were a lot of the reason many people said they were so much happier and felt such a lift when they came over from Twitter. Now it's getting to be harder and harder to tell the difference.

@greenpepper22 @MyView Or sometimes it can be used just as a content wrap for posts. Like for example, Enaphor automatically puts one on long posts.

@MyView @Fragglemuppet I believe it stands for content warning, like if it’s a picture of a dead body or a particular topic like animal abuse that folks would want a heads up about before getting into a post or thread

CW, content warning, can be used for everything from food to self harm to current events that contain themes that may have personal relevance for people who aren’t you.
They exist so that people can decide if they want to engage with sensitive or distressing material or not. They also function like a newspaper headline: the meat of a toot is often buried, so the CW will let ppl know it’s relevant to their interests instead of skimming past.

@Tooden @MyView Not only images, but anything that people might not want to see, hear or read. Triggering, depressing, or sometimes just boring, long or extremely niche. Also sometimes it's just that one thing everyone's talking about today that the poster knows people might be tired of seeing.

I haven't posted an attachment without some sort of alt text in longer than I can remember, and I try to tag posts that might upset someone, though I don't use content warnings for that. But no, Fediverse clients have never had prominent "specify an alt text and consider content warning this" messages in their UI. Most people never notice the options, and have never done so. It wasn't built on that, any more than it is today. The only thing happening is people telling each other to do that stuff. But what you say only appears once, then gone forever, so it's a continuous uphill battle for you.
What I want is to be able to reply with tags, if the original poster can't or won't tag their disturbing shit appropriately. That'd make this a happier place. -

@greenpepper22 @MyView @Fragglemuppet Content warnings don't always have to hide unpleasant stuff. They're great for discussing spoilers in movies and TV shows.

@Fragglemuppet alt text. It's not that hard and even a little bit goes a long way.

@greenWhale @Fragglemuppet Absolutely. I ESPECIALLY like it when people quote post using screenshots.
If people are going to do that, PLEASE make the effort to put the text of those posts in the alt-text. I am sighted and they are hard for me to read. I am sure that they are a necessity for the sight impaired.

@GreatBigTable saw a poll a while back. The outcome? Sighted people also like alt text. @Fragglemuppet

@Fragglemuppet I still scream at people for not using CWs or alt text and spend more time writing alt text than the actual posts sometimes, including writing alt text for other folks' posts. I also try to avoid boosting posts without alt text or sufficient CWs.
My timeline is also mostly like this, since I block anyone that does not CW stuff properly.
Fwiw normally I would ask you to CW this as "CW+alt text meta, mention of Twitter" but it is true that I have been less strict about CWs recently. Wonder if I should change that.
Just to make it clear, we seem to agree on the importance on CWs and ofc alt text, so this is friendly ramblings of a girlie that has not slept for the past 36 hours scrolling fedi before she passes out :)

@ity I gotcha. I ramble when I don't sleep, too.
I get that people often disagree on just what should be CWed, and usually I take the stance that if the majority of people say to CW something, I'll do it, whether I personally would want it or not. It's not just about me, after all. But I do have to question the idea of CWing posts about accessibility. This is something that shouldn't be covered up and no reasonable person should disagree with the need for it.

@ity That's true. And I was upset when I made that post, and CWing upset rants is probably a good idea in general, lol.

@Fragglemuppet my policy is if anyone wants it CW'd, I CW it, since CWs aren't hiding, covering up or obscuring anything, they are creating a choice. It's a summary of a post. Literally - CWs go into the summary field of an ActivityPub object.
The reason why I would ask to CW the post is because you didn't discuss just alt text, but also CWs, which spawns discussions like those, which many folks do not like to see. Eg. when I am low on spoons I generally do not open posts that need a lot of energy, including any kinda *meta posts, including CW meta.
I'm also working on account-wide CWs in case someone asks me to CW technology posts x3
