1. he's spent most of his time in #peru, and is a dual national in peru
his heart is in peru
3. if his words serve a counterweight to #trump on issues like #immigration (remains to be seen, yes, but there are promising signs: he is progressive to centrist on issues (relative to the church, not absolutely, of course))
then the symbolism that bothers you (an american) becomes a potent symbolism that works for you

I know, I also had a bad opinion of Francis because of what my Argentine colleagues said about him in 2013 regarding his supposed omission and complicity with the Argentine dictatorship and, as pope, Francis was also weak on the issue of sexual abuse in several cases. But he has gradually surprised me positively. I will wait to form an opinion. Here I only sought to provide information and not to express support or rejection.

It was much easier back then, today there are so many Protestant designations that there is not much room to create the "Church of Trump" (although I do not doubt anything else coming from this government of crazy and shameless people) and its MAGA fanatics)

If the aim is to propose to the USA people a "unified christian church" whose laws will override the Constitution, such a church could be agreed by various christian obediences.
