      @chjara @alina @expergetech (Modern Arabic, Urdu, Farsi, …) x (English, German, French, …) = a lot of transliteration systems, never mind the fact that often there are multiple transliteration systems in use

      (and at the very rare end of the scale you can end up with e.g. transliterations between different writing systems which use different extensions of the latin alphabet. or cyrillic and latin or similar)

      @erincandescent @chjara @alina @expergetech And probably a bit of "I'll just write it how I hear it" kind of transliteration system.

      @artemist @erincandescent @chjara @alina @expergetech Heh that X made me remember that the h is fricative.

      And checking https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiceless_pharyngeal_fricative made me realize that I do use it for «faire» in french.

        Voiceless pharyngeal fricative
        The voiceless pharyngeal fricative is a type of consonantal sound, used in some spoken languages. The symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet that represents this sound is an h-bar, ⟨ħ⟩, and the equivalent X-SAMPA symbol is X\. In the transcription of Arabic, Berber (and other Afro-Asiatic languages) as well as a few other scripts, it is often written ⟨Ḥ⟩, ⟨ḥ⟩. Typically characterized as fricative in the upper pharynx, it is often characterized as a whispered [h]. Features Features of the voiceless pharyngeal fricative: Its manner of articulation is fricative, which means it is produced by constricting air flow through a narrow channel at the place of articulation, causing turbulence. Its place of articulation is pharyngeal, which means it is articulated with the tongue root against the back of the throat (the pharynx). Its phonation is voiceless...
