the web was kinda really the only component of computing that was truly driven by only corporate interest

and if you know anything about non-engineers running an engineering project this is what happens

@theorytoe you don’t need to implement nearly every spec they have to make a browser work but I don’t know what you do need

@sun buts its more of a shot in the water as far as what you would need, and even then its dependent on what websites you want to work properly.

in the theoretical case that you only need ~1% of the current spec to work to get what you need, thats still 1.14 million words of spec you need to write. Contrast that to tcp, which is only 34k words (approx) total

much more to say most of the complexity comes from js/webgl and all the insane client side bullshit that has been shoved on the browser since some retard thought that was a good idea

@theorytoe Throw it all out and write a new spec. We will call it web 5. Oh wait, that one guy wrote a comic about standards and now no one is allowed to create a new standard ever again. Almost forgot.

@theorytoe the web is probably the biggest technical debt ever, it's literally a hypertext markup language and people just glued all sorts of things on top, then you have all these backend/frontend frameworks trying to make all the things glued on top feel more "integrated" in a way (or at least that's how i view frontend frameworks that abstract the dom interface and whatnot)

@meso @theorytoe @Rocket It solved one problem accidentally. Easy to write clients for old devices. And then they blew that opportunity by enforcing TLS. Gopher is still better in that regard.

@theorytoe @sun surf actually works, I even passed a cloudflare "click the small box to access the page" check to use deepseek on it. but retarded hotkeys and lack of extensions keep me from actually using that.

@phnt @theorytoe @Rocket well it didn't solve it then, it's TLS by design, you can't even write a Gemini client in Hare cuz Hare does not have a TLS library. t. tried to do that

@meso @theorytoe @phnt @Rocket why do we need a new retarded protocol anyways, just have sites that don't run 100 javascript scripts and it should be fine. no one is using gopher/gemini/whatever the latest alternative protocol is for transmitting plaintext some autist wrote
