parasocial relationships kinda weird.
somehow i understood the assigment although i tend to watch people doing things as a hobby and then i see them for entertainment and we all understand we're just ships passing in the night :blobcatderpy:-

@beardalaxy not read the original book but i think for it to be parasocial you have to actually believe and act like a personal relationship exists between you and the idol.
simply liking someone's work while still understanding no relationship exists but market maker-taker isn't really that -

@icedquinn yeah I'll talk about how much I love creators/artists/musicians and stuff and sometimes I wonder if people think I'm parasocial about it. I get more worried about people thinking that than I do actually being parasocial because it's not even on my radar lol.

@beardalaxy i still sort of find the idol industry abhorrent for its internal mechanisms but i've been wondering about some parts of it probably make sense.
its all still very manipulative and corporate though. -

@beardalaxy like the west you get this because, well, if you watch a streamer/tuber over the course of years they're gonna say stuff and if you pay attention you hear some of it. after a while you've accumulated all these random details its awkward to remember no relational transaction ever actually took place.
in asia ... they've pretty much taken this discovery and slapped in to the business plan.
was reading a thread from kpop fans talking about there's been a huge shift from it just being managed identities to now the brands are like actively trying to bait parasociality and skinner boxing to the extreme.
