   it is *so obvious* that the adoption of AI is going to be a broad scale disaster and people are going to become far less capable of independent thought and action as they let chatbots do more and more of their thinking for them
   
   the arguments I see against this extremely predictable outcome boil down to magical thinking and womanly rationalization for being lazy
   
   your brain does not become more powerful in other directions when you stop using it. you just become dumber and less capable

     @mischievoustomato AI is useful insofar as explaining sections of code or configs if you're not sure what's going on.      @Forgetful_Gynn @earthling There is an inflection point where a tool stops boosting capability and starts doing too much of the work for you such that you become dependent on it and cannot do the work without it. Consider the difference between a hand plane and an industrial thickness planer.
     
     A notebook is far on the left side. AI is far on the right. They are not even slightly comparable.

     @mischievoustomato I could see some local models that knew things like basic coding/sysadmin tasks useful to ask questions to if I've run into something I'm confused about. But, I have online AI tools for that. @deprecated_ii @jimmybuffettfanaccount

     I really don't believe that this case is an AI problem, as much as lack of human contact problem. When you spend years alone (I know a ton about that), your brain will get into a self-reinfforcing loop, where your old habits get so entrenched, that even thinking outside of them becomes difficult and muddy.

     Even though, who the fuck knows...
