@Rob_T_Firefly -- Thanks.
@jeffowski You might wish to add the # fediblock hashtag for visibility to the right people.
@fembot -- I have not run my own Mastodon or other Open/Fedi server so I cannot give specific examples on that side...
However, as a former sysadmin, generally, YES, administrators have access to parts of the server the regular user simply cannot go. They have access to your email, data, login times, and even location data with mobiles, etc.
SysAdmin stalking has been an issue on every college campus with a computer science department, especially if they have student employees running things.
Somewhat related: Can someone here tell me if ppl on their own private servers can see who is reading their posts/accessing their serverposts from masto/fedi?
I've heard that it's easier for stalkers to, well, stalk via open source than a walled garden, though I would not have expected that.
Please hold the snark on this one, if you can. A serious response is most welcome tho. Thx.
@fembot -- I have a very good internet protection suite.
It includes anti-tracking plug-ins.
If you're on the internet, I highly recommend using a service.
I use BitDefender. It works well.
@jeffowski whoa, ok, thanks. I'm not a digital native and some of these kinds of particulars are murky to me, so I appreciate the insight.
Presumably, most individual private fedi/masto servers aren't from institutions but I see your point about the potential for access abuse either way. It's why I mostly shy away from clicking ppl's links to their own websites as well, unless they state they don't use trackers, etc.
@fembot --
First off, you need to understand what it means to be "Open Source."
This is a "Class" of software denoting software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified.
That's it. After that point, most Open Source software lean on specific licensing. Open Source software utilize "Copyleft" and "Permissive" licensing, mostly.
Mastodon utilizes GNU Affero General Public License. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Affero_General_Public_License
CONT ->
A followup Q: I've heard it's easier to hack/change/customize open-source code to breach someone's SM account access or stalk them, as compared to a walled-garden site. Is that even true? I mean, is that a built-in vulnerability of open source? Thx for any insight
@fembot --
I am not an expert on Open Source or Licensing associated with it, but my understanding is that the creators of Mastodon used the GNU Affero GPL because it specifies that it is intended for software designed to be run over a network, adding a provision requiring that the corresponding source code of modified versions of the software be prominently offered to all users who interact with the software over a network.
The network bit is important considering the purpose of the software
@fembot -- While there is nothing to prevent someone from maliciously modifying the code, but it should be open and accessible for someone to review the code. The idea is that if there is nefarious or malicious intent, it could be found and reported.
There have already been instances of Mastodon servers losing licensing. (Truth Social in 2021)
@ruedi -- That's the owner of that Mastodon instance. If you report to loaded.sixguns.com, you're just outting yourself to the MAGA crowd for harassment.
@jeffowski
People who call themselves a "firearms enthusiast" need to get their head checked. :wtf:
Blocked and reported.
How do I keep track of who I've muted and blocked?
1. Log in through your server's website or the web app.
2. Go to your profile page and click ︙
3. Select Muted Users, Blocked Users or Blocked Domains.
4. If you want to remove a mute or block, click the icon next to a name on the list.
@jeffowski
I didn't report to that instance. Maybe I formulated that wrong.
Can I see my reports somewhere? (like blocked profiles I mean)
