My deep dive into Julius Evola has been disappointing. I knew him from short articles before but his long form books are full of schizophrenic revisionism.

@ubernigga You have to keep in mind that his books were written in the 30s and that he's coming from a traditionalist (ancient era) viewpoint. -

@Forestofenchantment The ways he's wrong isn't really excusable by the era he's writing in., whether it's the 30's or the 70's.
Eastern scholarship wasn't great but he's often going against the grain in ways that don't make sense.

@ubernigga Have to agree with you on the later statement. His writings in Revolt on the Varna and all castes being spiritually equal seem puzzling... -

@wertimer @ubernigga Evola seriously says that in Revolt. Specifically that all castes in the Varna serve different functions determined by the spiritual purity of their actions in the spiritual plane, but from a top-down perspective of the Gods, the Brahmin and the untouchables are both performing spiritually equal acts, as they're both doing what traditional society asks of them. -

@Forestofenchantment His method is a dime a dozen in Christian scholarship. He has his own ideal that isn't particularly rooted in a tradition at all, but he's a huge dork and likes reading old books that no one else does, which makes it easy to repurpose ancient language for his own internal idealism.
Guenon fits the label "traditionalist" more aptly. His methods weren't perfect either but his project is based in solving real tangible defect that developed in the Western tradition.

>brahmin house prices skyrocket
>brahmins are priced out of the brahmin quality of life

@Forestofenchantment Evola's best works are either short, where he briefly informs readers at a superficial level, or internal critiques of alternative positions. He falls apart when he interprets his own view of tradition.

@Forestofenchantment @wertimer If he believed in rebirth, this would actually be a defensible position, but as far as I can tell he explicitly writes it off as an accretion.
The point he's trying to make is that everyone is served best by fulfilling the role they're born to do, no shoving square pegs in round holes, which is a fine idea, but the way he's using tradition to justify that is wrong.

@ubernigga @wertimer He considers instances of reincarnation as different manifestations of transcendence, dismissing the notion that anybody could reincarnate or something like that. -
