@icedquinn@gabriel This happened before and I waited it out, but the possibility of Fosstodon getting defederated or shutting down is higher now so I'm just going to self-host. I'd rather not have my access to Fedi be determined by what random mods think about whether other random mods will or won't ban some third random mod.
@adiz@arnelson@gabriel i tend to think of nostr and zot as being similar bot nostr might be a little more well defined (though i dislike the numeric ID system, useless, just use string IDs like CLAP does and let compression sort it out.)
a custodial nostr server could be better overall since it would be able to implement account recovery/delegation for the majority of people who desire that, while the protocol itself still supports picking up your bags and leaving.
i know for one i'm too tired anymore to care about which server i'm "allowed" to use on any given fucking day because some blue hair wants to bitch about their ingrown toenail being censored
@icedquinn These phenomena are primarily a Mastodon thing, and not really representative of the wider Fediverse. Nostr is a good idea in concept (P2P), but horrible in execution, and a disaster in actualization. The Fediverse is "flawed", but this "flaw" will always be intrinsic of user > server > server > user organizations that necessitate trust. It's both a good and bad thing depending on how it unfolds or how it's utilized/weaponized. @arnelson@gabriel
@adiz@arnelson@gabriel i get up and write free thing for people who don't pay or appreciate me to use. feeling kind of shit because i just wanna tabletop but people keep denying me any basic agency.
:blobcatphoto: oh no quinn you put it on github didn't you know big tech are AI nazis :neocat_laptop: ok i'll use stagit :blobcatphoto: BUT QUINN the usability of that is awful! it's so hard to browse! :neocat_laptop: ok i'll switch to gogs i guess :blobcatphoto: BUT QUINN that's dead, you gotta use gitea now :neocat_laptop: okay i guess i can switch to that its simple enough :blobcatphoto: BUT QUINN that's now a garbo cryptobro out of hong kong if you don't switch you support hitler! :neocat_laptop: i love phabricator lets do that :blobcatphoto: BUT QUINN phabricator went bankrupt :neocat_laptop: okay how about i pay for sourceforge :blobcatphoto: BUT QUINN if you don't use this one specific kind of license drew supports you get banned from the platform, also drew personally hates autistic people and makes a point of trying to ruin them online, also drew is apparently (?) an ebebiphile (???) :neocat_laptop_owo: I'LL INSTALL FORGEJO THEN YOU FUCKS :blobcatphoto: BUT QUINN SOMEONE POSTED NIGERIAN BALLS ON OUR MAILING LIST THIS IS A FAR RIGHT WING ATTACK BY HITLERS PERSONAL TIME TRAVELLING ROYAL GUARD :neocat_gun: i will fucking end you
@icedquinn Nostr comes with its own set of flaws and issues that the Fediverse is quite robust at handling (e.g., spam). It would be fairly difficult to control all of that without some sort of conservatorship or custodial model (intrinsic to the Fediverse and decentralized across individual instances).
Honestly, once you leave the Mastodon side of Fedi, all these issues with Fediverse's structure really melt away. And, outside of the protocol itself, I think the Fediverse benefits from the best and largest community across the alternative networking space, and the best overall user experience in terms of functionality and usability (it's coherent, the client and server softwares are matured).
There is also work being done to develop and implement genuinely migratory or nomadic identities on ActivityPub. @arnelson@gabriel
