    This article on the Trump administration planning involuntary hospitalization of those who are unhoused is an indicator of some much more terrifying things on the horizon https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-clear-homeless-encampments-mental-illness-b2740126.html

    Mental health services and hospitals *can* provide needed treatment; some do a good job, some are terrible. But they require a ton of resources to run.

    I don't think we're looking at housing by medical professionals... I suspect this will be private prisons

      Mental health institutions themselves can be a traumatic topic, and may be to some of my readers. They can be another form of incarceration, or they can be life saving, depending on the person, the reason a person is there, the facility, the care given, and how they got there.

      I *cannot imagine* sweeping up a bunch of homeless encampments into some form of involuntary institutionalization is going to be anything other than a nightmare.

      @cwebber Trump's orders also have the unstated assumption many people have (and seems to be reinforced in this country to help support the status quo) that homeless people become homeless only because of substance abuse or mental illnesses. That's not true. But of course, once you become homeless, it's incredibly stressful in so many ways, you will have mental health issues regardless of where you started. The root issue is that people are homeless.

      @cwebber These days, I hear talk of "livability", which often seems to be the way of saying "we don't like seeing homeless people" without actually saying it. Like the visibility is the problem. :/

      It's just frustrating. Homeless people aren't the problem. What's causing people to become homeless is, but it's not all mental illness and substance abuse or moral failing. But too many people are willing to believe that and the US loves it punitive policies. :(

      @cwebber I'm reminded of letters to the editors I've seen over the years. Different times and different places, but someone will write to the editor of a large city newspaper complaining that when they visited the city (because they don't live there of course) that they saw too many homeless people and it's hurting the city's reputation etc. And can't they do something about these homeless people? Move them or something?

      @cwebber @hankg

      The plan is to criminalize not being sheltered and send the undesired others to work camps under the 13th Amendment.
