   I can't really imagine wanting a higher-spec computer anymore anyway. It's not like there are new, better games or any generic programs that need a faster CPU than what a mid-grade machine from a few years ago has already.

   The only reason hardware is still getting better now is for AI slop, and most of that is just cloud-based anyway, except for the stuff on your own processor that summarizes what you're doing for the people spying on you

     @vic @PurpCat maybe. I'm on some pretty good hardware but I still don't have AVX-512 or AV1 hardware encoding/decoding. I'll want that eventually.

     @vic @PurpCat I mean nothing is wrong with x264 if your turn your bitrate high enough. AV1 has a lot of flaws and it depends on the content. The point is that AV1 is part of the WebM spec which effectively means it is a standard video interchange format. I wouldn't use it for my own archival stuff, but for minimal bitrate distribution like on the fedi. We should be seeing AV1 hardware decoding on new hardware right now.

     what does av1 get you that hevc doesn't? I know more open source or whatever, but even new codecs aren't even that impressive anymore

     @vic @PurpCat to be specific, my ORIGINAL RESEARCH shows that AV1 handles stuff like pixel art or abstract geometric imagery very poorly as AV1 has a type of temporal distortion whereas like x264 just adds noise artifacts to the image. It does better for stuff like human faces where you can more safely interpolate between organic shapes.
