     this is tangential but it tickles me every time i do it, so i'm sharing:
     
     whenever i pick up a book with an interesting cover or title from the fantasy shelves, i look at the name of the author.
     female? i look to the fellow authors blurbs.
     if all female (gays and jews count), i walk away, knowing the book is an HR reel
     
     i have saved myself from wasting time on even a first test chapter of so many books with more ambiguous covers / backs
