@whitequark @cafkafk Yeah pretty sure that's where most cardiac cath stuff is inserted?

@isabel @whitequark @cafkafk How does that even work?
Like, getting the cath there is one thing. but how do you actually perform a repair while the heart is beating?
Or is there some kind of non-invasive bypass technique now that doesn't involve cracking the torso open?

@azonenberg @isabel @cafkafk i don't know about mitral valve repair, but a stent is inserted via the catheter while it's compressed, and then something like a pullcord is extracted out of it, making it spring open

@whitequark @azonenberg @cafkafk I got my mitral valve repaired through the femoral artery once, went home the same day, pretty cool how that works

@whitequark @azonenberg @isabel @cafkafk yeah valve repairs work the same way. You have a bioprosthetic valve folded up inside of a large stent, and you release that stent in the middle of the existing valve. By unfolding, it forces open the existing valve and effectively replaces it with the prosthetic one.
Some models of stent (both for valve repairs and coronary interventions) are self-expanding as you mentioned, others are balloon-inflating where there's a balloon folded up inside that you can manually inflate and pull out again afterwards.
