Posts about medicinal herbs hardly ever include the side effects or any negative reactions. It's always, "drink chamomile tea to relax and sleep" and not, "15-20% of people are allergic to ragweeds, which includes chamomile, so it might give you a scratchy throat."

-Drinking mint tea regularly can cause acid reflux and exacerbate other GI issues.

-St. John's Wort calms you, and is good for depression, but it can also dangerously lower your heart rate if you take beta blockers.

-Sure, fennel is great for "digestive issues," but don't schedule a date that night, you will be very gassy.

-All members of the Poplar family, which includes Willow, contain the same chemical as modern aspirin within their bark. Don't give it to your kid if they have the flu or chicken pox, it can cause a deadly reaction.

-Rosehip helps with painful menstruation, and is a great source of vitamin C. So great, in fact, that you can overdose and give yourself kidney stones if you take too much.

-Dear white people, taking turmeric every day will literally turn you orange.

the "chemicals bad, natural good" crowd doesn't understand plants have been devising chemicals to kill or maim what is trying to eat them for hundreds of millions of years

@benroyce @Cat_LeFey ISTR that in "Islands In The Net" by @bruces there is a character who vehemently refuses to eat natural plant matter on the grounds that plants have had billions of years to evolve poisons aimed at herbivores.

@benroyce @Cat_LeFey It cannot be overstated how important this is.

It's true that the best "natural remedy" is a healthy and active lifestyle, but it doesn't prevent all illness. Modern, scientific medicine is the tool when when illness comes regardless.

@anandphilipc @Cat_LeFey aside from difference in the quantities consumed culinarily vs (possibly overconsumed) in hopes of health benefits, some of us are so frighteningly pallid that daily amounts like yours might be visible after a while!

@Cat_LeFey i dont know how white people take turmeric, but we use it everyday, in literally every food we eat every meal, it doesnt turn us yellow. putting it on your face will tho. fairly certain it is not secreted in sweat. it is barely abosorbed anyway.

@Cat_LeFey So many people think "all natural" means "harmless." Folks, arsenic and uranium are also all natural! There's a reason herbalism used to be something a person studied for years before making recommendations to others. (Full disclosure: I'm an herbalist, practicing since 1991, and I have an MS in natural health and an ND. And I'm still learning.)

@ElementalEcho @Cat_LeFey i'm under the impression that in the mind of a lot of people they are powerful, but have no bad side effects, as they are "natural".

@Cat_LeFey So many people think that herbs are less powerful than medicin, even though they were medicin for thousands of years. It's silly.

@Cat_LeFey and don't even get me started on what Licorice-root, Echinacea, elderberry, and Cinnamon can do. Not all together of course. But the amount of times I have messed myself up with tea is amazing. Not to mention ginger spiking my heart rate to ridiculous levels. Last time that happened I was incapacitated for at least a day.

@Banur @Cat_LeFey Lots of people think that "it's natural, so there are no side effects."

They think that conventional medicine has side effects because it only contains the active ingredients. The whole herb has other ingredients that prevent side effects from occurring.

Seems about as plausible as the Doctrine of Signatures, but 🤷🏼♀️...

@mjausson "Doctrine of Signatures"; Thank you, will keep that one in mind!

I wasn't aware that sympathetic magic has a pseudo-scientific alias.
