@echo @fluffy
> Would this work with any joystick?
Yeah, as long as it speaks like a normal /dev/input/eventX device.
> Like, if I wanted to do something silly like use a thrustmaster as a mouse, could I do so?
Yeah, check the config file, you can more or less see how it works.

AHA! That probably works great.

@p @echo wiimote seems like a good idea. bluetooth, well-supported, widely available.
still. it doesn't offer that much additional functionality. on my pointer i have 5 buttons, the wiimote has about ten? i'd like something i can at least do basic mouse movements with.
but the idea was good. i got to searching for "one handed game controllers". truns out there are VR controllers. check out this doohicky with the trackball

@p @echo right? it's got a scroll wheel for if i'm reading something to scroll, nice big left/right buttons, two triggers, and five "media keys" which i can just program
i guess the only thing missing is some sort of... backlight or indicator that makes it easy to find in the dark. but maybe there's some device i can attach to it that does that?

Phosphorescent paint or tape or something? Or just solder an LED inline and poke a hole so it's visible.
Or get a DevTerm or uConsole, something you can hold in one hand, and then run barrier on it so that you can control the other screen with it.

@p @echo those don't fit my use case. i'd sooner make a full custom peripheral with e.g. qmk & 3d printing

@p @echo @fluffy they have a thread tracking order numbers....apparently this is normal.

@fluffy @p wiimote has motion controls for the pointer though. it is even more convenient than a trackball in some circumstances

@tribune @fluffy Does that work when used as a regular device when you try to get the Linux to talk to it?
-

@p @tribune rather than solder in an LED, isn't there some minimal product with a light that i could tape on?
right now i bought some glow-in-the-dark tape but annoyingly it's only good for a couple hours in the dark

@fluffy @tribune I don't know of something like that; I mean, if phosphorescent tape doesn't work for long enough, you'd probably need a battery, and probably easier to tap into the battery on the device than to affix another one.
If you're using a Wiimote, you could just wear IR goggles, it uses an IR beam.

@p @fluffy @tribune wiimote is a receiver. It doesn't transmit any IR IIRC.

wiimotes have an ir camera, the ir leds are on the "sensor bar"

@ins0mniak @echo @fluffy @p I got mine, whats funny though is the pi 4 in my dev term killed it self. I got a pi 5 but idk if i want to go back to the dev term or try the u console with it (i still also need to learn how to make a os that works on arm)

@dcc @ins0mniak @echo @fluffy Form factor on the uConsole makes it not super useful without a nice processor, I think. So if you have a Pi5 and an R01, I'd put the Pi5 in the uConsole.

@dcc @echo @fluffy @p Yeah i wish they were a little more communicative. I don't mind using the stock os r whatnot but Ill prob go with the pi5. The difference between that and the pi4 is very noticable.

@romin @p @fluffy @tribune You can even use two tv remotes or two candles in place of the bar, it works
