   i dither back and forth on mandatory voting

   at first i supported it

   then like you i thought: you can't force people to care. force them to vote and they'll just draw dicks on their ballots

   but lately i've been thinking, just getting people to exert a little effort, and enough of them will have the slightest level of care to make a difference

     Hello! Australian popping in, hope you don't mind. We've had compulsory voting here since 1924. On the latest data from the last federal election, the percentage of wasted votes (informal votes) is circa 5%. So, you're getting a very good representation of that the electorate actually wants.

     Having grown up with compulsory voting, I can't understand people who don't vote.
