   Knowing that I could just sit on a train and have wifi and be able to work, see some sights out the window, etc is alluring, but the round trip flight is $700 and the train is almost $2000 so why the fuck would I bother

     @feld lukewarm take: trains are expensive because they are rather efficient if you're not moving a similar load all the time for a long time (decades). in most other cases, planes and cars are better.

     @CrazyTalk @lain doesn't help that they've been outplayed by the freight industry which intentionally use trains now that are too long to take the side-tracks and wait for traffic so the passenger Amtraks *always* have to yield

     @lain @feld Trains are expensive because Amtrak has given the fuck up and does the bare minimum they are required by law, which doesn't include cheap rooms. In other places roomettes are cheaper than flying.
