     I know 4chan never had a good rep or anything but days like these do make me nostalgic for what I consider the golden days of imageboard culture.
     
     I don't think any online platform had more impact on shaping who I am today. I know it's cool to hate on 4chan, especially because a lot of bad things came from there. But there was also a lot of good things, at least for me.
     
     Without 4chan I might've never:
     
     * Gotten into many hobbies such as vocalsynth music or cars
     * Become a programmer as my career
     * Gotten into the free software movement
     * Made many friends for life that I still speak to almost every day.
     
     There's probably also a bunch of toxic stuff that I've had to leave behind tho.

     Before the 2010s I don't think 4chan was right wing at all. Yes, it always was still extremely offensive and racist, I am not going to deny that.
     
     But it was doing that moreso in a shitposting and libertarian kind of way, not in the unironic right wing extremist kind of way.
     
     You knew most people back then were doing it for edgy shock value and baiting reactions, not because they actually wanted to commit genocide...
     
     Poe's Law hit hard.

     @dagda@netzsphaere.xyz Also 4chan feels very American-centric today (especially because of politics) while it used to feel more like a global thing that was just part of internet culture, specifically otaku culture.
     
     Back then you used to meet people from the imageboards at your local anime convention or hackerspace and then you'd become friends for life.
