      @kateyagi@denden.world the "bunch of phones taped together" thing is for early-game trolling

      if you're really trying to push it, you'll have automated VMs with scripts pushing your propaganda and autocreating accounts like this video

      there's no real way for platforms to defend against it (enforcing hardware attestation would ban most of their legitimate users)

      @jessew I remember seeing of video of one of those rigs that were a bunch of phones wired together for doing that with tiktok. I see twitter has less measures in place against that.

      @jessew @kateyagi How would hardware attestation ban most of their users when they're mostly normal people that have never installed a new operating system or gotten a part replaced?

      @jackemled@furry.engineer @kateyagi@denden.world the trick is that most OEMs genuinely do not care about things like security, so a LOT of Android phones (especially the cheaper ones) completely fail all but the most basic hardware attestation, which can be trivially spoofed

      @jackemled@furry.engineer @kateyagi@denden.world the state of Android hardware security is appalling once you look outside of Google's hardware (the Pixel phones) (for context Google develops Android, so they make use of all their security features)

      @jackemled@furry.engineer @kateyagi@denden.world the good thing about Android is that when done right, it can be the most secure operating system out there (beating iOS, mainstream Linux, Windows, etc) (depending on your threat model, of course "secure" is a very vague term)

      The bad thing is that the only vendor who does it about correctly is Google :neocat_woozy: (and you still need a fork of their stock OS like GrapheneOS to harden it further and remove the Google crapware)

      @jackemled@furry.engineer @kateyagi@denden.world modern Android doesn't ask for admin permissions to install a package, because there's no such thing as admin on Android (root is disabled, even the system UI doesn't run as root)

      The permissions system is so strong that you can confidently install anything and it's very unlikely that it will be able to cause damage to your system

      @jessew @kateyagi It hasn't been secure in a long time because it both stopped trusting the user to make security decisions about what access programs should have & started deciding that on its own (allow most things by default with no option to turn them off) & that it trusts the user too much to make security decisions (Google Play Protect is the same as Windows Defender's annoying ass little popups that do nothing to educate you on what the issue is). Modern Android doesn't even ask for admin privileges to install a package, which every other Linux based anything does, even your microwave oven!

      @jessew @kateyagi I need Android 7, 8, & 9 back so bad. "Scoped storage is to protect your sensitive data :)" but it doesn't do shit because it still allows access to your home folder where your sensitive data is, & you can't selectively disable it for a trusted file manager to be able to put your sensitive files somewhere else!

      @jackemled@furry.engineer @kateyagi@denden.world Android 9 still mounts the system partition as read-write 😭

      Those versions are far worse in terms of security than modern Android, there's no question about it

      @jackemled@furry.engineer @kateyagi@denden.world and yeah Google play protect is bullshit, "malware" on Android is basically just data stealers, it can't get root or brick your OS like on desktop OSes
