This is arguably the one thing that’s driven Musk’s whole miserable career. His actually engineering skill throughout his entire career is, by all the many accounts I’ve heard, somewhere between mediocre and complete fuckup — in the few instances where it’s even been relevant at all. But he’s really good at working tropes and learning shibboleths and using the “shiny thing” allure of tech to project social power, and people are still falling for it.
And who set up those social structures he’s exploiting? WE did.

  I think it's a mistake to think these people don't do storytelling and know they're doing it. Storytelling is a critical piece of what they've been good at doing. They align continually with whatever stories bring them unchecked and sweeping structural power. So, "engineers" was an obvious way in.

  Him and Trump both, 100%. Confusing it with other kinds of intelligence is dangerous in the extreme; so too is failing to recognize it as an intelligence.

  I suppose this is the completely unsurprising apex of an investor capitalism that does not reward things that work, but only creating the belief that things are going to work in the future (so get in on it now!).
