   Apparently this is a marketing strategy combined with a maintenance reduction strategy. Business major I know said that consumers react to color strongly, and by removing it for a truly neutral tone, white or black, you make it more likely that anyone with a color preference will shop at your store.

     It's true for home buying. People worry more about colors and typically don't have a vision for whatever place they're picking up. Why heritage interior elements are stripped out in craftsman houses when being done up by house flippers. Slop consumers are the bigger market.

     @rher @istvan pretty big difference between a house and a car. it's also a lot easier to paint a house than to do a *good* paint job on a car that's already assembled, so the loss of the latter choice is more impactful
     
     people who destroy old homes and turn them into HGTV open concept comfort inn clones also deserve the volcano

     @wgiwf @rher @deprecated_ii You should NEVER put ANY money into a house you are going to sell.

     The absolute first thing the new occupant will do is tear it apart and make it the way they want it.

     All the money you put into wood floors, granite counter tops, etc, is just being lit on fire. It's not helping you sell at a higher price and no one wants it.

     Short of reclaimed flooring, I haven't seen a proper hardwood floor in ages. It's like one day the industry decided IKEA-tier flooring was the gold standard. And foam underlay isn't helping either.

     @MCMLXVIIOTG @rher @deprecated_ii @wgiwf They still throw $3000-$6000 into that puzzle piece wood flooring.

     And the next occupant will tear it out and buy the color or texture they want.

     I floored my basement for free just waiting for the house next door to change hands twice. Sure enough, all the flooring was out at the curb within a month every time.

     i could look at a floor i didn't really like but wasn't fucked up for a long time before putting in the effort to tear it out and replace it
     but i don't have a nagging wife to complain about the floor being ugly
