@gianmarcogg03@mastodon.uno I use Telegram, the software that runs on my device is actually so I don't see a reason to delete my account. I recognize its flaws and don't shill it as the best thing since sliced bead like Signal fans seem to do?

What pisses me of especially is those misleading images that pretend Signal is part of the fediverse somehow.

@SuperDicq I agree it's misleading, although the OP corrected that in a comment for some reason: https://fediscience.org/@fresseng/114261656460291494.

@zleap@qoto.org Join the Fediverse #GlobalSwitchDay Under these headings, the migration from commercial proprietary social networks to Fediverse. One exception is Signal, which is not a member of Fediverse. It is, however, the suggested destination for Messenger and WhatsApp users.

@SuperDicq the funniest thing that happened was years ago where the signal desktop encryption key was in plain text. seems like it is still not fully fixed? idk im not too up to date on it https://www.security.nl/posting/849609/Signal+stopt+met+plain+text+opslag+encryptiesleutel+desktopapplicatie

@mikka I don't want people to use Telegram either. It's also a messenger that I only use because of people who do not want to use Matrix or XMPP

@mikka Both Whatsapp and Facebook messenger already use XMPP under the hood. I remember 15 years ago when you used to be able to message people on Facebook from any other XMPP server until they closed federation.

@SuperDicq its all about compromises. i dont think in the next 100 years normies will take matrix or xmpp seriously. unless there is some big company that advertises some new slop software that uses either under the hood.

ive tried getting some friends to use matrix but most people tend to stick where others are. best i got to work was a bridge from matrix - discord channel. a ton of hoops.

@mikka The EU Digital Markets Act was supposed to enable "interoperability" between all major messaging services which means things will improve soon.

But of course big tech will always find a way to make it suck as much as possible because once again the EU didn't go far enough and gave them too much leeway: https://xmpp.org/announcements/open-letter-meta-dma/

@mikka The job of corpos is to make as much money as possible by any means within the law. They are literally forced to do this or their investors can sue them for not having their best interest in mind. Such is market capitalism.

And even that wouldn't be so bad if we actually properly regulated the tech industry to ensure fair competition.

Unfortunately the average voter is more occupied with "brown skin people bad" pointless culture war type opinions which are fed to them by the big tech recommendation algorithms to actually do something about it like voting for a Pirate Party or literally any other politician who at the very minimum understands "how to open pdf"

@SuperDicq the question ill have my entire life: why is big tech so ass. like yeah i know why they do it because they're scum, its just, why.

i mean atleast its something, but should i or others be glad with the bare minimum a big company can do? i personally dont think so.

@mikka I might be a little hyperfocussed but I think all the big problems in society are caused by proprietary software and copyright law abuse.

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @mikka@minidisc.tokyo Considering every person currently in charge got elected with the help of proprietary social media recommendation algorithms I'm pretty sure it's safe to say all of them.

@SuperDicq @mikka The elected leadership is the cause of most of the big problems, but not all of them.

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @mikka@minidisc.tokyo Yes, the other big problems are caused by the unelected leadership, aka big tech billionaires.
