    we whipped up a bittorrent swarm that has 200TB of proven storage in like a month by cobbling together everyone's random hard drives. storing 200TB on s3 would cost at least $4.5k per month and would cost $10,000 to download it one time.

    why is the cloud good

      @jonny they're storing multiple copies for one. How well is yours going to survive read errors? I guess you could generate PAR2 files for all the data so you can repair if anything is broken I guess

      The cost of storage on S3 can be reduced a lot with their tiering options but you can't escape their costs to download it 💀

      @jonny you're assuming there's going to be more than one seeder around and based on my experience the answer is: haha, yeah right

      @feld
      Bittorrent is designed to make duplicates and everything works off hashes of data, no need for additional checksum files to check integrity, thats what a torrent is

      @jonny we still worry about the specs being controlled by a fascist(?) iwrc. but we suppose that can be dealt with by maintaining our own independent implementation, and hard-forking if necessary?

      i think counterarguments against bittorent - not even p2p, specifically bittorrent - would be a lot more convincing if i couldn't just see it working right now and all the time and in a bunch of different circumstances where there were other supposed reasons it shouldn't work good.

      you know what it takes for someone to get involved with torrenting? download qbittorrent and click a download button. you know what it takes for someone to get involved with s3? to have their mind melted as smooth as glass, their credit card surrendered, and rendering their fate unto the prayers of the bot traffic god

      Well, maybe they should.

      Normalize blaming the cloud.

      @jonny is the swarm private or publicly accessible? Is the data something that doesn't need to be secure from public access?
