UI snappiness on Windows just blows everything else out of the water. It is so much better there is no competition. Linux and MacOS just feel slower. - lainy and Forest of Enchantment like this.

@maija even just dragging windows around feels fast and smooth. it feels smooth on macos too but not snappy. there is some kind of milliseconds latency going on. -

@sun true. and its annoying because the problem is either bloat, or where theres not bloat, slow animations and stuff to match the pace of the bloat -

@beardalaxy I'm a Linux partisan but I have to give credit where credit is due. Through circumstance I'm on MacOS right now. -

@sun imo windows is the best OS that is only dragged down by microsoft's insistence on adding stupid shit to it. but when you know how to disable the stupid shit i don't think there is a reason to not use it besides personal preference.

@maija The scheduler for Windows is just really really good under most circumstances. -

@sun i don't know the internals too well but i suppose trying to pretty up and make do with very old code instead of making new and more complicated stuff will do that -

@maija Like way back in the NT days you could run low latency audio editing, analog video capture, etc. on stock Windows. On Linux you had a run a custom soft-realtime kernel that broke stuff. -

@sun it really is, i wish it was better under linux at least, too many lockups under high load and such -

@beardalaxy @sun The NT kernel devs are one of the last people that actually know what they are doing and care about what they do. People can meme all they want about constant bugchecks, but the reality is that Windows itself doesn't do that. It's usually shitty 3rd party drivers. The bloatware and Win11's stupid UI decisions are the issue. -

@phnt @beardalaxy @sun NT is a shining jewel of design and even the X11 tier dollar store Macintosh Toolbox clone API it's wed to can't change this basic fact -

@sun @maija no animations or vsync, it's faster if you allow tearing and don't have to lerp movement ✙ dcc :pedomustdie: :phear_slackware: likes this. -

@sun What proprietary drugs are you on?
I've been unfortunate enough to use windows and it's a lagfest where you spend most of the time waiting for windows to carry out your operations, or for the dedicated loading icon to carry on for ages.
Meanwhile on a free GNU/Linux-libre distro, with a Xorg DE, each UI operation and GNU bash command is executed instantly (sure there's a bit of lag on bootup while everything loads from storage, but the lag ends when that's over).
Some garbage Wayland DE's are a lagfest and some garbage software puts slow running operations on the display thread, but that has nothing to do with Linux. -

@sun completely depends on what you're running on top? I have shit in windows where the window just lags several frames behind the cursor if i drag it around too Doughnut Lollipop 【記録係】:blobfoxgooglymlem: likes this.
