     I've stayed in hostels that were all pods, but they were kinda cozy .. and cheap.

     This was a hostel in Singapore in 2015. We were stacked three high, and they kept the AC on freezing cold (it was like 28C outside in the winter). There was a similar one in Galway Ireland I don't have photos of.

     Nah, it was really nice. The smell was .. unmemorable. The showers were even nice.
     
     The only really bad smelling hostels were like Sydney .. and London.
