@a1ba every rtx versions are tech demos just to convince people to not buy RTX cards (every demo looks like shit and runs even worse)

@drq I wouldn't be surprised if pathtracing renderer itself works on non-nvidia cards, but it clearly targets their upscaling and framegen tech.

@hj @drq that's what I mean that just pathtracing would probably work on amd.

tbh I'm kinda biased towards rtx mods because, well, there are two pathtracing mods that use engine I work on: xash-rt that wraps around gl1 renderer, and w23's fork that adds pure vulkan renderer, targeted at rtx extensions at this moment.

But even so, hl2 rtx... just looks meh.

@a1ba @drq well, raytracing does make lights and shadows realistic but at the same time it can ONLY do realistic lights and shadows, there is no way to do "negative light", i.e. intentionally darker areas, rim lights, highlights etc, there's also an issue that original game had darker area with little light but it was still visible but with RTX it would be completely dark with no (real) HDR to fix it so they put bunch of lights just to make it brighter but it ends up looking worse (and still too dark).

oh and point light sources look wrong in reflections (at least in blender)

@hj @drq I guess there is a lot of work to make rtx mod look different enough from baked radiosity lighting
