     @lizzy in the nixOS community the mods argued that they don't have to explain themselves about what they do and... that just really massively irked me, but well, it's not like anything will be changed and idk what other thing to use, but at leaast on my day to day nothing changes for me.

     @lizzy @big_louse also just because you're an "unpaid volunteer", doesn't mean you get to do whatever you want, if you can't justify what you did, you should outright not be a volunteer and should be removed

     @big_louse just because the magnitude is different doesn't mean it's not the same behavioral pattern of power abuse. and in the extreme case - banning someone from all their channels of communication without warning - yes, this can threaten someone's livelihood (and also yes, that's something I've seen happen)

     @lizzy yes, when the unpaid volunteer on a website operated at the owners expense deleted my poorly worded incendiary post out of vague fears it would generate controversy for the instance, that's the same as being terrorized / kidnapped / murdered by armed agents of the state

     @mischievoustomato @lizzy as for free software projects if you aren't really active in the development community you could really not give a damn about how they moderate it.
     I would however completely avoid software with hardcoded restrictions (like Tusky, funkwhale, lemmy) and prioritize donations to collectives that don't purity spiral twice per month
