There are a lot of people I think that see commerce as a good or bad thing, but it's kind of similar to violence - it can be used to good or bad ends.
I think a lot of people in particular that hate it get really focused on people using it for bad things and think they can somehow "get rid of it" - but just like violence, that's not possible.
People that make a lot of money also seem to think they are important similar to how general act.
I think the older concept of "if you make a lot of money it is incumbent on you to do something good with it" is a more correct way of looking at things; no-one imagines that if you wield tons of violence that you aren't responsible for results.

@jb yes, and the founders knew this, and tried to make a form of government which was resistant to individual groups of leaders being shit.
What we have now is a great lesson in what happens where judges are saying "AKTUALLY, you have to keep paying the bill, bigot"

Any useful form of government or economic structure is going to need some level of benevolence from its leaders
History shows us that it is possible but eventually it rots and has to be reset
