    LA Times: Newsom stymies implementation of landmark California plastic law, orders more talks

    "...Gov. Gavin Newsom this week stymied implementation of landmark state environmental legislation that would have limited the amount of single-use plastics sold and distributed in California — drawing outrage from environmentalists.

    The law, known as SB 54, was signed by Newsom in 2022. ...

    “The only thing that has changed since these regulations were finalized six months ago is that Gavin Newsom is now running for president"

      @rustoleumlove Yes. It was not cheap stuff either, I seem to recall (ie expensive trendy mall stuff). I know and have stepped through that world but absolutely abhor it. (too many times in country clubs where I wanted to barf from the elitist/racist/privileged crap going around, as bad as you might imagine). Old money is the worst. (though the new money guys in charge right now aren't looking so good 😬 ). Being extremely wealthy can often (not always) bring out the worst in people. I know more than a few 100-millionaires who grew up poor or lower middle class, great values, but their kids turned out complete trash because of the money. (despite their efforts to steer them right as parents).

      @ai6yr

      politics itself attracts a personality type that seems so vain and self-interested.. completely at odds with the office.
      obv there are exceptions.
      but power also corrupts.

      ...have you seen the Wire?
      the Baltimore mayor and his ways .. lmfao.. so much the 'type'
      and lol - that same actor also plays quite the conniver in game of thrones

      @rustoleumlove Yes, he was the most vain guy I know. Very attractive to many girls for some reason (scion of some rich family, part of it, and the charisma factor). My first college room-mate was similar -- very egotistical, but attractive to women, so much so he had a girlfriend at school and one back at home. Hamptons area rich kid. Instead of doing laundry, he bought new clothes. LOL just looked him up on LinkedIn.

      @ai6yr i think confidence is part of it too. people like this think they are owed the world.

      lmfao at the laundery thing. jfc, that is so unimaginable to me.

      i'm so far removed from that world.. i have dated a couple people who had friends like that, but i've been more or less separate from the upper class. i dont think i have known anyone who had like, staff.

      @rustoleumlove @douglasvb I knew someone who was going into politics (in college, majored in Political Science and was going to become an attorney, then run for office), and he absolutely fits that profile. I think he was cheating on multiple girlfriends at one point. He had fancy hair. I should go see what office he holds 🤔

      @CStamp @douglasvb I believe this is because Newsom is a politician guided by polling and sampling the wind, and not by any principal. Clearly he has no values, and is just licking his finger and sticking it up in the wind, and it feels (to him) like the only way to win in this world is to become a center right (or right) politician. Similar to the kowtowing by the WaPo/NY Times/LA Times, they're reading the wind and adjusting their sails to maintain their business/power, damn any principles. "Well, I guess it's good business to be the NAZI paper of record now! We better adjust our business plans!"

      Apparently Dems haven't learned that trying to cater to the cult doesn't work and they *should* be catering to THEIR base.
