Back in the 90s, I had a Celeron 333 in a custom wood box under the seat of my Buick. It booted Windows 95, had a parallel port LCD attached and double taped to the dash. I changed the registry so it brought up Winamp instead of Explorer, and used an LCD output and keypad plugin. I had a printout of my music in a book and could literally go to each song by number. ... I wish I had photos of the whole setup, but I didn't think to take any at the time.
I bought a used laptop off my pastor in college, like 2001 or 02 I think. It died not long after though. I found a picture of the carPC, although it's on a workbench and not mounted in my car.
@get@djsumdog@mischievoustomato i've kept them alive with as little as an ebay battery replacement. but some i replaced the keyboard, battery, trackpad, memory, drive and still came out ahead
In the mid 2000s i took a dremel to the slide-out ashtray of a subaru legacy, cracked open a Zune dock, mini amplifier, and USB hub, hardwired everything together, and then into the legacy's cigarette lighter and speaker harness, and epoxied it back together so I had a slide-out zune dock in the center of the dash. I was sure I had some build photos somewhere, but I can't find them now.
That sounds like a clean and fancy setup. The Zune and eyePods were the only high capacity music players for a while too. There was an old site called carmp3.com that was dedicated to car audio builds, which is where I found those winamp plugins.
@get@djsumdog@sun@mischievoustomato I'm still using my first laptop (Old Elitebook before they turned garbage) I was gifted as a preteen in 2015 as my main laptop that I use daily. Sounds like you've only used low-end slop.
@Forestofenchantment@djsumdog@sun@mischievoustomato I had a high end one with a great gpu and I thought would last longer than every other laptop I've had and even that was like 5 years or less lifespan. A damn toughbook and Thinkpad only lasted like two years for me too 💀
I will never buy an expensive laptop ever again, I view them as purely disposable now. Im only interested in high end desktop not craptops
@Forestofenchantment@djsumdog@mischievoustomato@sun actually now that I think of it the only laptop that's lasted like ten years is a really really low end one from like 2008 that I got gifted as a kid but I never use it because it's so low spec
