   ‘Why don’t homeless people just go to a shelter’

   There are 605 in line for a waitlist to the shelters

   Shelters also don’t let you keep your place, so you have to check out every morning and literally get back in line again.

   So in order to have a shot at a shelter, you don’t have time for like, job searching. Or doing anything else

     Also you can literally lose your limbs sometimes at a shelter

     @skinnylatte All this is less true of newer shelters -- like in Sunnyvale there is one that is close to public transit, allows families to stay together and even keep their pets with them, and I believe although you can't drink or do drugs there they don't insist that you must be completely clean and sober -- but San Francisco's shelter system is a lot older and less centralized.

     @troutgirl do they let you continue to stay in the bed? The ones in sf I’m thinking of, you have to check out daily and get back in line again. It’s very inhumane and unproductive

     @skinnylatte That I don't know. This shelter is now specifically designated for families and I don't know what all that entails in Santa Clara County.
