In '09 my sibs and I rented a six-bedroom house in Park City to accommodate our families for a ski trip. When we arrived, there were only butter knives in the kitchen, nothing sharp.

We called the rental place and learned that the previous guest had been Al Gore, and the Secret Service had removed the knives ahead of his stay

JD Vance is skiing in Vermont on a very public mountain. How does that work? Are there SS guys who are expert skiers surrounding his family on the slopes?

I don't understand the knives thing either. Weirdly, they locked the knives away but left the knife block empty on the counter (which is how we discerned they were missing, rather than non-existent).

Just asked spouse and sib to affirm my memory of this. They recall there was no silverware at all when we arrived. It was all wrapped in plastic and stashed in the boiler room.

Maybe he hosted an event at the end of his stay and it never got unpacked?

@mattblaze @kims ...yeah, I don't get it. Al Gore doesn't like to cook or something?

@kims Wait, were they afraid Gore might cut himself?

Horseback riding I understand. One can seal off paths and limit access. For stadium events you can screen the audience with metal detectors

But skiing is one of the few things that even the super rich can't monopolize for themselves. Watching the videos from Sugarbush, I saw a kid wipe out and take one of the SS agents down with him

I suppose there's some overlap between skiers and expert marksmen, but for a family of four It must be a logistical nightmare

@kims I remember when Reagan was president there being a team of Secret Service that rode horseback with him.. so I don't doubt that there's a SS database with extracurricular activities in which the agents partake somewhere so they can get the right team in place.
