@cyberspook why credit gnu for linux thou, it just doesn't sit right with me and it's that type of BS that has made FSF so unviable, like instead of stuff like that scaring away people from free software (something RMS is great at doing himself for the last 30 years) they should focus on what they are good at, making licenses and helping other people make great software, like...

GNU is the operating system, Linux is the kernel, both together get you a working system on which you can install all sorts of other programs.
nobody's crediting GNU for Linux.
the opposite happens when one refers to the GNU operating system running on top of the kernel Linux as if the whole thing was Linux.
we ask GNU to be credited for GNU, not for Linux.
the main reason for that is that, in order for GNU to fulfill its purpose of defending users' freedoms, it's important for users to realize that this is the system they use, so that they can learn why it was made, and why their freedom is important.
Linux doesn't share those goals, mission and values; it doesn't defend users' freedoms, it often stands against them, and it's proud of its unprincipled stance. there's nothing wrong with being proud of one's stance, but it would be self-defeating for people who care about users' freedoms to promote Linux's values and sideline GNU.

@cafkafk I'm sorry, I don't see how rms scares people away aside from how he has a track record of being almost always correct.
Every time I hear of an allegation against rms, I go look for the details and it's either a lie, rms has written something correct (except people can't read) or rms responding to something in a way that is seen as "weird", but without malice.
As far as I am aware, rms was the one that wrote the majority of the licenses the FSF published, although he had plenty of help from other people and also from lawyers.
rms also wrote a lot of the GNU software at the start to get the project going.
The FSF is not much without rms, as the FSF has not much sense of direction without rms's guidance.
If people are scared off by freedom, I can't do anything for them sadly and so I see no reason to falter with the goal in reach, yet so far away.
