    @thendrix I want hard proof the check was sent / ACH deposited. Let's be honest it's mostly all ACH these days.

    Also as soon as Social Security is notified of a death they will claw back payments. So for all these supposed dead people receiving payments? We can just suck all those funds back. If it overdrafts their accounts who gives a shit, that's the banks problem not the government's.

      @feld @thendrix yeah it's all ACH now, they don't cut physical checks anymore, they ended that.

      (incidentally this fact is very inconvenient for people saying that old people can't get ids because since the patriot act in 2001 they would have needed an id to maintain a bank account, which since the last several years they need to get social security)

      @sun @thendrix Indeed.

      So we know from COVID that the death certificates don't get communicated back to the gov very efficiently in many parts of the country. We should modernize that of course and provide what is necessary to have it done consistently.

      It wouldn't hurt to put more responsibility on banks here either. They should be reporting dormant accounts for older Americans. I'm curious about how fraud detection wouldn't have picked this up and I'd be surprised if all these people had joint bank accounts so someone else could siphon off the funds. That's a lot of joint accounts that isn't shared with a spouse. Another red flag the banks should pick up.

      What if this is Wells Fargo, chase, and JP Morgan ignoring it so they can keep collecting fees?

      Lots of possibilities and questions. The numbers without more information just lead people to wild conclusions.

      But seriously fuck the banks, they would be my first suspect not Americans. There's no way we have millions of individuals doing SS fraud, it doesn't pass the smell test

      @sun @feld @thendrix Incidentally, that's not how it works.

      There is a contract awarded to a large bank in Texas to issue debit cards for SS recipients who don't have bank accounts.

      @sun @feld @thendrix And the claim they don't have id comes from what part of your ass?

      The ID issue is a 2 parter -- voting and real ID requiring a birth certificate. Not a SS issue, but I know how you like to fuss things up.

      They don't need a bank account, so that part of your ass that was pulled from is where you'll find "Social Security recipients don't have ID!!"

      They needed id to cash the checks back in the paper checks days anyway.

      PS: I figured out the deep secret of everyone on this thread. None of you has a clue how life works outside of pressing send on the internets.

      @LostInCalifornia @feld @thendrix lol I know all that shit I just also know that the number of people that can't actually do it is small and goes down every year, the voting issue is 99% bullshit, it's not about inability to get id, and you know it

      @LostInCalifornia @feld @thendrix You aren't dumb, I can tell by talking to you, that means when you ignored what I said in my first interaction with you that you're not worth talking to. You know I'm right but you keep talking.

      @sun @thendrix @LostInCalifornia the ID thing is often bullshit but there are exceptions like how they fucked over people in Wisconsin ~2016. It's a bit better now though.

      > “Right now, the dirty little open secret of Wisconsin is that just 31 of our 92 DMVs maintain normal Monday through Friday business hours. Forty-nine of them operate only two days a week. One, in Sauk City, is open for just a few days a year. Only two are open at 5 p.m., and just three are open on weekends. For the whole state.”

      meanwhile here in Washington:

      I went to the DMV, got my new license. They asked if I wanted to register to vote and that was it. I'm registered. The ballots will come in the mail automatically.
