>Hubbard's son Nibs said that Aleister Crowley was his father's most important source of inspiration, and scholar Hugh Urban has written extensively about the occult roots of Scientology.[262] Nibs Hubbard said in an interview in 1983:[263]
>What a lot of people don't realize is that Scientology is black magic that is just spread out over a long time period. To perform black magic generally takes a few hours or, at most, a few weeks. But in Scientology it's stretched out over a lifetime, and so you don't see it.
Makes so much sense. Never considered it before until I learned the Crowley/Hubbard link. Sorry America, a degen esoteric occult Victorian Brit heroin addict is sadly responsible for Scientology.

@augustus The last ritual in Crowley's system is you create a religion.

@sun @augustus
Hubbard got involved in OTO/Thelema via Jack Parsons (the rocket scientist who founded JPL). Crowley seriously did not like Hubbard, and saw him as an unscrupulous manipulator and narcissist (takes one to know one I guess). But there's definitely something to be said for creating your own religion (even if it's just for you alone), because a) it means you understand it's purpose and meanings 100%, and b) since it's personal you're more likely to have the courage of your convictions. However most people who try to create a religion for other people are just in it for the power and often also money.
