People are obeying in fashions that they don't even realize makes them collaborators.

@VulcanTourist @hannu_ikonen @Kierkegaanks Which is incredibly frustrating because they're all dead obvious. Like *actively doing things* out of 1984. Scrubbing websites, editing scientific papers to conform, removing books from libraries. None of this is subtle.

@VulcanTourist @hannu_ikonen @Kierkegaanks And it's like a fucking Padme meme when I ask the ones who are (I guess in their minds, "bravely") reporting the stuff they're being told to do, "and you refused, right?", just go silent. 🤦

@VulcanTourist @hannu_ikonen @Kierkegaanks It's NOT existential. At present we still have working unemployment benefits system, bankruptcy system, etc. Much better losing your job now refusing to falsify scientific results when there's a system to support you than losing it 3 or 4 years from now refusing to conduct brutal human experiments in a concentration camp where refusal means becoming one of the inmates.

Journalism is a nice paycheck for some, and the HR departments might be comparing notes on undesirables.
Existential self-interest usually wins. Now imagine a world where journalists are like ombudsmen and paid not from a corporate wallet but from the public trust?
I know, I know, I have that glazed look in my eyes again.

@VulcanTourist @hannu_ikonen @Kierkegaanks Rather than existential, it's more sunk cost fallacy in attachment to a dream that's already over. Whatever careers and futures these people thought they had, that's GONE. Your career now is halting the nazification of our shared planet. If you succeed in that, you *might* someday have something similar to what you (already) lost.

@VulcanTourist @hannu_ikonen @Kierkegaanks Or... you can have something that superficially resembles the form of what you lost, but that's not actually it. The same way LLM output resembles the form of information, but isn't information. You can publish propaganda that's neatly formatted like scientific papers. But it's not science.
That's the life these people have signed up for when they refuse to refuse.
