On a QWERTY keyboard, D is right next to E. `crontab -e` edits your crontab, and `crontab -d` deletes the entire thing, just completely blanks it. I think I knew that (I've seen that man page a hundred times) but I've never used `crontab -d`...until yesterday evening. (I have still never used `crontab -d` *intentionally*.) - Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: and ✙ dcc :pedomustdie: :phear_slackware: like this.

@p Reminds me of * and Enter being right next to each others on a french keyboard, heard so many rants from this. (At least I use a US layout so I'm immune from that one) pistolero likes this. -

@lanodan Oh, that's gotta be fuckin' rough.
On the regular Unix layout, backspace and return are adjacent, but I usually just use ^H, it's a little less travel. -

@p Yeah, one of the few things I have remapped is backspace, it's next to space on my laptop and desktop.

Ah, that's gotta be convenient. I use the Super_L/Super_R keys for cycling through screens in fvwm2 and through windows in ratpoison so they're occupied.
I can understand how the space cadet keyboard happened, you know, I've never wished I had *fewer* buttons.

@p Interestingly looking at the space cadet seriously now and I'm like… man this thing is built wrong, make the space bar much smaller and then put a shitton of keys there.
Although reminds me that when I had a Type 7 USB Sun Keyboard I barely used the extra keys on the side and numpads are just useless to me.pistolero likes this. -

@sun @lanodan I wonder if X even has seven slots for modifier keys or if you'd have to do some QMK hacking to make it report that it has a bunch of extra keys and just emit those when the extra modifiers are pressed and then have xmodmap treat it like a Greek letter or something.

@p @sun Well X11 uses 8-bit for keys so might be a bit limiting if you're not making your own physical map (typically it's all the generic evdev map these days), wayland it's the same xkb but 16 bits so not a problem. pistolero likes this. -

I have commented out, because of my distress at the whole Oracle thing that lead to the keyboards becoming impossible to get, a bunch of ridiculous keymappings that I had trouble living without. The bottom five of the keys on the left were for controlling cmus (previously used for xmms), I had mapped "Help" to urxvt (and modifier keys, shift made it larger, control made it smaller, alt spawned FvwmConsole instead of a shell, etc.), one of the keys was mapped to the pop-down terminal, etc. Then the last one fries and I have to switch to the HHKB.Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: and ✙ dcc :pedomustdie: :phear_slackware: like this. -

@p Reminds me that my Sun Blade 150 doesn't have a sun keyboard to do with it, luckily unlike on macppc it drops to an OpenFirmware prompt by default.
It's kind of ironic that I got sparc machines (given by school to local hackerspace) but after my Sun Type 7 died.
I still have a sun keyboard but for Ultra 10 and those aren't USB but a somewhat proprietary mini-DIN that allows plugging the mouse into the keyboard.pistolero likes this. -

@shadowferret I think I am mostly back. I had a backup from...2021. `ls -t|tac` applied to a few relevant directories solved the rest. ✙ dcc :pedomustdie: :phear_slackware: likes this. -

@lanodan @sun I don't think I'll ever have a reason to use Wayland; X already sucks, I don't need a thing that sucks more.
The keyboard under Plan 9 works about how you expect it to: by the time events get to the user, it's text and you don't have to care about that stuff.

Yeah, the Type 4? I think those things were made better than the USB models. -

@p There's few differences but I feel like Type 4 and Type 7 are pretty much the same, I'd think about using something like a teensy to use a Type 4 over USB but my desks are a constant mess so spare keyboard being a sun would be just annoying.
In fact might just get something like a HHKB as spare keyboard as I'm left on only one spare. (Only permanent being my desktop)pistolero likes this. -

> There's few differences but I feel like Type 4 and Type 7 are pretty much the same,
Yeah, my only issue is construction. If you found a Type 4 behind an office building by the dumpster (couldn't be me), chances were good that it would still work and continue to work indefinitely. The stupid "let's shove some traces on a sheet" that Sun adopted was prone to failure in the event of slight dampness or also just for no reason. -

@lanodan That has been the thing that failed on every Type 7 I have ever had. (You will notice that expletive-laden posts about spilling Red Bull or Rockstar on the keyboard stopped when I got my HHKB.) Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: likes this.
