   Seth Meyers said that a niche, indie 2.5 h movie produced on a 10 MUSD budget would have difficulty competing with a "normal 1.5 h Marvel movie".

   Is he aware that Marvel Studios haven't produced a single movie that was as short as 1.5 h?

   (at least not since 2008 ... did Marvel Studios exist before then? I won't look that up right now, but I think they didn't, other studios licensed Marvel works and made films)

   The first two MCU films were just below and just over 2 h. Their epic Endgame film was 3 h and pretty much carries all blame for the fact that nobody makes blockbuster films shorter than 2 h anymore.

   Normal movies were 1.5 h in the 80s, the formative cinema years for people like Meyers and me. Not anymore, least of all Marvel movies.

     @clacke long movies came back more or less with lord of the rings 2001, 178 minutes. basically all peter jackson. iron man brought back marvel movies from the brink in 2008. honestly I was really surprised because iron man is kind of a third string character.
     
     the x men movies did really good for a while but petered out

     @sun The X-Men trilogy were each ~100 min, normal films according to my standard. But they weren't Marvel Marvel.

     @sun I disagree. LotR were all considered a special epic exception and didn't change what was normal. Others still kept to ~100 min.

     But after Endgame it was like every film maker went "well, if a stinkin super hero flick can go for 3 h, surely 2.5 h is nothing for my far artsier film".

     @clacke @sun All I know is that around 85 minutes I start wishing the movie would end. I don't watch many movies, but when I do, they're almost always painfully long.

     Films that deserved, earned, to be over 2 h:

     - LotR trilogy
     - Infinity War, Endgame
     - The Dune films
     - The Count of Monte Cristo (2024)
     - Oppenheimer
     - Deadpool & Wolverine
     - The Substance

     Impressive films that earned their 2 h but still managed to stay just below:
     - Arrival
     - Barbie
     - The Stuntman

     Films that just lazily crossed the 2 h mark because you can do that now:

     - Sonic 2
     * Sonic 1 stayed under 100 min
     * Honorary mention Sonic 3 didn't have to go almost 2 h.
     - Honorary mention Alien: Romulus. I liked it! A lot! But didn't need all of those 119 min.
     - Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Very good movie, almost watched it in cinema a second time. But 30 min story and 60 min fighting would have been a good balance. The story basically rounds off at 90 min and then they just threw in a 30 min boss battle because they wanted it.
     - The Last Dance (HK film, not Venom). Lovely, slow film. Didn't have to go quite that long.

     @noyoushutthefuckupdad @sun I think I watched three of them and they were pretty good, but I only really remember the first one.

     The second one had Stellan Skarsgård grown stuck in a wall I think? Did I actually watch the third one? Not sure.

     @clacke I am so happy to meet someone else who's bothered by excessive run times, too. My rule is all moves get 100 minutes gratis. Beyond that, for ever 10 minutes you take, you've got to do something with it or you're just making things worse. Generally, it's better to make the film shorter than longer. Trim it down to what matters most. Kill your beloved ideas, directors!

     Oh, also, I nominate Lawrence Of Arabia in the "deserved to be over 2h" list.

     @clacke I will definitely say that at nearly 4 hours it takes some endurance to finish, but it works hard for its run time. I also love that its quality directly scales with the size of the screen you watch it on.

     This reminds me that I have the random internet person's cut of Tencent's Three-Body Problem on my to-watch list.

     I liked the Netflix one and started watching the Tencent one, but the pacing was too frustrating.
