   Something to understand about the HOA is that they pretty much only exist on #Mastodon.
   
   They’re completely invisible on #Lemmy, #Pixelfed, and #WordPress.

     It's not a surprise considering their understanding of the whole thing. I'm sure they're part of the people who think that "Fediverse" is just a fancy word for "Mastodon."

     right, which says a lot about her character and the reasons for her harassment of Fedi devs. She feels powerful being able to talk down upon and threaten people.

     @BeAware @DavidBHimself Let’s ignore the tone for a moment. She’s right that moderation has a cost and we should be paying people for that service.
     
     Right now, everyone wants moderation for free. And consequently, if moderators aren’t being financially compensated, then they’re likely motivated by something else: power.

     @BeAware I’m not so familiar with her because I personally haven’t spoken to her. But it strikes me that the Fediverse itself has an internal conflict that has not been addressed.

     One one hand, we need safe spaces where people are protected from harm. On the other hand, we need spaces that are both censorship resistant and redundant. The problem is, one person’s safety is another person’s censorship; and another person’s free speech may also cause harm.

     Now the only way to allow these two things to happen is to allow for pluralism, and to stop seeing the #Fediverse as a singular space. This is one reason why I now prefer the term #SocialWeb for what I want to be built because what’s at heart here is that when you build an ActivityPub-enabled service, you are not necessarily building for one singular space.

     @benroyce @BeAware The clique, as you call them, are essentially the same people.
     
     What’s wild to me is that they could defederate but choose not to—but instead harass.
     
     At a certain point, admins and devs will need to have courage and quarantine the most toxic harassers and the spaces that host them. And yes, I’m suggesting defederation if need be. But ideally, conversations should be had with ringleaders to assume good faith. If no common ground can be found, then defederate.

     abuse is abuse. but some don't feel that's what they are doing if it doesn't fit the typical modes of bigotry that we are used to

     and to be clear, bigotry is the most overarching problem

     the fedi middle school mean kid clique is a minor problem in the larger scheme of things

     but it's a form of rot in the fediverse. it's toxic. it drives people away

     like you said, people get high off power

     and the most petty ridiculous forms of power can deliver stunning transgressions
