They are intrigued
My mum: ‘you told me this was a suburb and I can’t get food easily, that’s not true, Panda Express is 5 min away!!’
@TheJen she was too full from our clam chowder dinner to try but I think she is determined to do it soon
@skinnylatte LOL. Did she like it?
@alysondecker I think they’re willing to lower their Chinese food expectations while abroad for ‘as long as there is rice and chicken in some form’
@skinnylatte soon to be horrified?
They’re more flexible than me in this regard where there’s some Chinese food that just doesn’t register at all as Chinese food they know and so is therefore completely foreign and worth trying (they’ll also go back to some of the best Chinese food anywhere, where they live)
Whereas I’m mostly grasping at memories of a taste from a distant home and stuff like panda is probably fine if I’m on vacation (because it’s a novelty) but because I live here now it’s a reminder that everyday Chinese food is.. of a different standard
@waitworry @alysondecker yeah it’s fine, just that American Chinese food is completely new and they definitely see it as a new cuisine they’re trying with some hints of familiarity
@skinnylatte @alysondecker I've known a few Chinese people who like Panda Express
I guess it is just sort of like Chinese food McDonald's basically
and it was actually started and owned by a Chinese-American family
